Social Security is facing a crisis with the impending
retirement of the Baby Boomers, and Washington is
bickering over partisan solutions, while nothing is
actually being accomplished.
Senator Wayne Bettencort decides to enlist the
Treasury Secretary and a colleague from across the
aisle with something to lose to participate in a scheme
to “thin the herd.” But their plan has nothing to do
with fiscal responsibility.
An NYPD detective begins to notice a disturbing
trend in deaths, but his theory is widely discounted
until his own encounter with one of Senator
Bettencort’s “plan participants” nearly ends his life.
As a result, he meets a Long Island lieutenant who
has been harboring a similar theory, and the FBI is
called. From there, Bettencort’s plan begins to
unravel.

He was almost to the Queens-Nassau border when he
looked in the rear view mirror and saw a set of headlights
gaining on him quickly. Reflexively, he eased off the gas
slightly and brought it down to fifty-five, just in case. He
assumed it was a highway patrol heading to an accident
or chasing someone who had passed by earlier, or some
yahoo taking advantage of the open road. It was neither.
It was a tan Crown Victoria, and when it caught up to him,
it slowed and stayed with him.
Ken's internal warning radar went up at once, and he
glanced over at the sedan. The driver didn't seem to be
interested in Ken at all, but was merely looking straight
ahead and watching the road.
Maybe he's got a detector and spotted a trap, Ken
thought to himself. He glanced over again and saw the
driver's head seem to bob a little. Was he falling asleep?
Suddenly, he started to drift into Ken's lane, and Ken
leaned on the horn. The driver didn't seem to notice, and
kept on drifting. Ken shot a look to his right and seeing

slowed to match his speed, and continued to drift.
